Today the Church tolerates utterly bad painting and sculpture, and banal music, in the belief that saccharine Virgins and barbershop harmonies are 'nearer to the people' than the 'distanced,' visionary Madonnas to which great artists gave (and still give) their souls and their skills. . . . Bad music, bad statues and pictures are irreligious, because everything corrupt is irreligious.
